Indoor supercross & supermoto Zwolle/The Netherlands, 31.01/01.02.2009
Season 2009 we started with indoor supermoto race in The Netherlands/Zwolle. Race format is very compact – free practise, two heats on Saturdat and Sunday plus superfinal on Sunday night. Most of the riders are form Holland and Belgium, like motocross GP experienced European and 4 time Holland SuperMoto champion Marcel van Drunen, and high class riders like Denmark SuperMoto and former European 125ccm motocross champion Mikkel Caprani and 2008. European S3 class (250ccm) champion Oliver Pope.
Unless you win, you can always want better result – in Miks finishes 4th. One rider from Holland disappoints a bit with a strange perception for aggressive riding. He bumps into Miks several times ruining top 3 finish. Once his bike even got stuck in Miks KTM back wheel. Big part of the track is supercross track, including whoop section, therefore SuperMoto suspension is a lot stiffer than should be.
Things in superfinal go very well – Miks wins the start and holds the lead for more than a half of the race, but then... a little technical failure, while breaking front wheel blocks and Miks is on the ground. 9th place in finish. Miks added : ”Very interesting event. More like supercross than SuperMoto. In the beginning it was kinda strange to jump the triple or blast through the whoops with slick tyres, but I adopted quick. The crash in superfinal was unfortunate. The front brake became weaker and weaker as a day went on, but we didn’t change anything. Then in one corner it almost didn’t brake at all, I pushed it harder then usually and front wheel blocked. When I got up, the bike just didn’t start. The situation was very advantageous – van Drunen had crashed and all I had to do was just stay cool for 4 laps. I am not sure that I would win, but top 3 finish was basically guaranteed. But that’s ok, because last time I sat on bike was more than two months ago, so my arm pump was terrible.”
On our way back we visited our potential German team. We spoke with manager, checked out team headquarters and Husqvarna SM 450 RR. As usual, everywhere is perfect German order and professional attitude towards sport. They invited Miks to team tests in Italy, but considering econmic situation in Latvia, we are not sure if we can afford it right now. No money – no party...
